Review

This review applies to version 2007.1 The latest version of this software will soon be reviewed by our informers.

FreeCommander Version 2007.10a is an alternative to the standard windows file manager. With this program you can perform every action needed to manage your data. It´s portable, so you can take it, just copying the installation directory on a CD, Pen Drive or a floppy disk.

FreeCommander Version 2007.10a is multilingual, supports 10 languages.

The main screen is divided in two panels, each one portraying the info related to one drive.

Under the File Menu you will be able to View, Edit, Copy, Move, Delete, Wipe (secure delete), Change Case, Rename or Compare Files. You can also pack groups of files using the .ZIP format, protecting them with passwords, creating self-extract .EXE files or splitting the resulting archive in several parts, in order to acomodate them in multiple discs. The choosen files on a panel will result in an archive file in the other panel. Of course, using this program you can also unpack .zip files.

You can split the panels using tabs, and arrange them as you like. You can even get a desktop snapshot (the third snapshot in this review was taken using that feature).
Advantages
  • It´s very easy to use and intuitive.
Disadvantages
  • Nothing to report.

I was getting fed up with particular issues in Powerdesk, and my ensuing search through various seemingly very worthy but in their different ways hopelessly flawed file managers led me to FreeCommander.

I had actually dismissed FreeCommander about a year before (in 2008), when Powerdesk had actually seemed to be a better option, but it's clear now that either FreeCommander has come up in the world a lot since then OR I was too hasty before and hadn't delved sufficiently into its vast wealth of customization and configuration options.

What I found this time was that every time I thought it hadn't got some feature or functionality that I wanted or at least would like, a little search around would reveal just that *and more*! It really is the most fantastic file manager, and, at least for my purposes, by far the best I've ever encountered. And one thing really nice about it is that its immense configurability has enabled me to hide pretty well everything that I don't need - so on the face of it, the program as I'm using it actually looks remarkably simple and uncluttered, but everything that is showing works brilliantly for me, the way that I want.

I would particularly point to a combination of (optional, of course!) custom columns, colour coding by extension, and an amazing 'quick filter' facility as making this file manager particularly awesome in its sheer efficiency and intuitiveness in operation.

You can truly ditch Powerdesk and its ilk and *upgrade* to FreeCommander.

Just one word of caution, though. Before you commit yourself by ditching Powerdesk et al, you need to try out FreeCommander to make sure that you're not one of the unlucky few who are significantly affected by the odd known bug in FreeCommander. I'm not myself, but, as with any multifeatured program, it can happen. On the other hand at least the developer is very active on seeking to resolve all reported bugs, and rund an active support forum.

A total recommendation!

I like the built-in MD5sum ability.
